Wes Anderson Inspired Backyard Wedding: Sarah + Corbin

Backyard DIY Wedding

When it came to designing their wedding day, Sarah + Corbin knew they wanted to include personal touches throughout the entire setting + create a scene that melded together all of their favorite things. They dreamt up the idea to have the styling mimic that of a warm + cozy home, but wanted to incorporate their love of the outdoors, too. So the perfect compromise was a backyard wedding where they could create lots of fun ‘wall’ vignettes styled with the quirkiest finds they could imagine! And when Sarah told us, My favorite director is Wes Anderson and he definitely had some impact on the design and style, it all started to make perfect sense! More from her on the overall design plan below:

I first knew that I wanted the over-all design to reflect our quirkiness and also speak volumes about our history and who we are with an abundance of personal details. However, that’s really all we knew we wanted. I had such a hard time when people would ask about the colors or really anything about the style of our wedding. So it ended up being the most adorable, industrial, midcentury, Texan, lovely, eclectic, rustic, Fantastic Mr. Fox styled wedding that I could have never put to paper or into words. We couldn’t have made any of it happen with out our loving family and friends who helped with everything from DIY projects to officiating. The whole day my heart was almost exploding with positive energy and sentiments from everyone near and dear to us. This is what made us who we are and made that day the best of our lives so far.

Thanks so much to Sarah of The Foundry for the event design + Paige of Awake Photography for the gorgeous photos below!

My favorite moments were seeing my mom tear up while I was getting the finishing touches getting my hair and makeup done. Sending love notes back and forth between Corbin and I. The prayer I had before I walked down the isle with all of our parents. Seeing Corbin under the tree when I started to walk (cliche I know). My best friend’s kind words about the way we look at each other. My brother and his girlfriend catching the bouquet and the garter. My uncle cracking open the straight-from-Arkansas-homebrewed moonshine which everyone had a swig of. Our last dance to our secret favorite song. Kissing my dad on the cheek good-bye.

We cannot get enough of the amazing walls these two created! Let’s hear a bit more about them from Sarah, I knew I wanted the wedding to have a very hand crafted feel, but I also didn’t want to bog myself down with project after project. So I picked things that would have a great impact but be relatively easy to execute. The biggest one (and my favorite) by far were the stand alone walls. Corbin and I discussed the design of them and I drew up a few rough plans and Corbs built and painted them. The styling of the walls was done by my aunt and uncle who have always been artists of home steading and making. The paintings on the walls were pieces done by my aunt.

Corbin’s grandfather, who has passed, collected electric line insulators and we incorporated those into our center pieces. Those stood on wooden blocks which my mom and stepdad burned our logo into. Corbin is a geologist with a super cool rock collection (which I still remember him showing me on our first date) and I knew I wanted to show case them in the terrariums I created. My mom and I had collected so many miscellaneous antiques and projects from our DIY Polaroid photo booth to me taking a whack at chalk calligraphy.

Do what ever you and your groom want and can do no matter what other people think. Book a day of planner at least. Just remember that at the end of the day, all you need is for the officiant and your groom to show up with love in their hearts.

Endless Summer Engagement Inspiration

endless summer inspiration

Heartbreakingly, we know that summer must eventually come to an end (unless you live in Socal like we do – we still have lots of summer left!), but today’s styled engagement shoot – sent over by Mary Costa Photography + Shindig Chic – celebrates the last bit of our fave season with lots of cute ideas for you to incorporate into your own shoot or wedding!

The ladies wanted to show off some of their very favorite things that make up a perfect summer day in LA! They tell us, Late summer is an amazing time for both fruit and flower alike – so that’s where our inspiration came from. We took to the hills of Elysian Park, which is a great hidden gem just above Downtown LA with a killer view. For us, classic summer is bike rides, kites, popsicles & picnics. We wanted the shoot to have a playful feel but added our own rich spin to it with deep pink tones, a pop of black and wild berries. Our stand out DIY was the dip dyed kite which caught the light so nicely at sunset.

Fall-Inspired Bohemian Wedding: Shelby + Zack

Fall Inspired Wedding

Shelby + Zack love the fall and dreamed of tying the knot on Zack’s family farm in Georgia – a place where fall foliage is abundant + also the spot where they got engaged! Since logistically it proved to be difficult, they decided to hold their wedding closer to home, in Florida, and do their best to bring fall to the setting! They incorporated lots of autumn colors + woodsy details into the decor and kept the vibe relaxed + easy going. And since Shelby’s day-to-day style is breezy bohemian, she wore a stunning Haley Paige dress + rose gold chains in her hair to reflect it to a T.

Big congrats to the newlyweds + thanks so much to Best Photography for the gorgeous photos below!

Fall groom

Everything was perfect! But I must say…waiting crouched down in my gown and heels behind a small hill before I walked over the hill down the aisle was surreal and hilarious all at the same time. Also, the moment after we danced our way through the crowd and got into our getaway car, we heard everyone shouting at us and waving goodbye…then we realized we didn't want to leave.
