Modern + Colorful Wedding Overlooking Malibu

Colorful Coastal Wedding

A Malibu wedding…minus the beach? It can be done, and today’s wedding proves that it can be done well!! The ocean was in full view as guests made way for the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains to celebrate the union of Hannah + David. Robin at RO & Co. Events says that H+D “instantly melted our hearts with their genuine love for one another and desire to create a truly personalized and authentic experience for their wedding.” With H+D’s vision to treat their closest family and friends to a festive, colorful, casual and personal celebration in their beloved Malibu, RO & Co. Events set off to make it so!

Hannah gave us the sweet backstory of the day David proposed: We met in college and had been living together for 2 years when David took me into the high sierras for my birthday and proposed in front of our gorgeous A-Frame cabin in the middle of a meadow with only our dog to witness. David, sentimental genius that he is, had the engagement ring made from a raw diamond that belonged to my late grandmother and the gold from his late grandfather’s wedding band (and he made our wedding bands out of the leftover gold). The whole engagement was so personal and authentic and romantic – it totally set the tone for our wedding.

SO romantic!! And to capture all romance of the wedding, Studio Castillero didn’t miss a single beautiful moment:

For my wedding dress, I wanted something super simple and timeless, but also completely original, so it didn’t take many bridal salon appointments to realize that we needed to make it ourselves. I designed it with a family friend, Allyson Fanger, who happens to be a costume designer. Allyson and I found this Italian fabric at the LA textile show and worked with costume house, Muto-Little, to bring the concept to life.

Meanwhile, David rocked a blue Paul Smith suit for the occasion!

Wanting to go for less traditional bridal party attire, I reached out to one of my favorite brands, Tucker by Gaby Basora, and had 2 simple styles of dress made in 10 different fabrics for a unified and festive, mix-and-match bridesmaid line-up. Tucker also made ties for the groomsmen out of the same fabrics used for the dresses. Tucker was a dream to work with and we are so happy with how everything turned out!

H+D instantly connected to Wright Ranch, an off-the-beaten path venue nestled into the Santa Monica Mountains and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The skeleton of an unfinished concrete home designed by Eric Lloyd Wright completed the unconventional aesthetic and became the perfect party space!

Bright, festive florals in every color were collected and arranged in a random display by Holly Flora, as if hand picked from a wildflower field.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

You can choose to not stress about this process. Certain things are inherently sensitive, like guest list, but otherwise choose not to stress the small stuff.

Friend of the couple, Kim Roselier, designed the festive + bright logo and Prim & Pixie incorporated the fun elements into paper goods throughout the day.

RO & Co. Events shares: The wedding party’s cheery mis-matched custom dresses and ties from Tucker kept with the bright colors of the day. We carried the bright mismatched print aesthetic onto the dinner tables with an assortment of colorful napkins atop stoneware.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Dancing and dancing and dancing. Between cocktails and dinner, the Family Band, comprised of my dad, brother, uncle, cousin — all musicians by trade — played an epic 45 minute set of some of our favorite songs.
