Hair Tutorial: Flower Fishtail Braid

Flower Fishtail Braid

Today we have a really fun + pretty hair tutorial to share with you thanks to Layered Vintage! With spring here and flowers in full bloom, we think this Flower Fishtail Braid is the perfect compliment to your wedding, shower, engagement photos, etc! Love the way blooms can add some extra pretty to your look. Here’s what Jill from Layered Vintage had to say about the DIY…

“We at Layered Vintage are so passionate about our blooms that we’ve ventured outside of bouquets and vases. At first it started with just wanting to make ourselves a little extra special at events so we’d take extra flowers and spice up our up do’s. Then after a few very successful events offering Floral Hair Swag and running a Blooming Braid Bar we decided this was more than just us having some fun. Flowers were meant to be in our hair!!

Nature really comes alive during Spring and with all the variety out there, I just had to create a Floral Braid Bar with every color of the rainbow.

Lets see how she did it…

Tip: Beforehand add texture spray to hair, run a curling iron through the hair creating soft spirals, coat with hairspray and then lightly brush through the curls – like above.

Step 1: Take a piece from one side, twist and pin with a bobby pin in the back/middle of the head. Repeat with a piece from the other side and pin on top of the first piece.

Step 2: Divide hair into two piles and keep separate by holding in each respective hand. Take a small piece from the left hand and cross over to the right hand pile. Repeat with the right hand. You’ll see an “x” creating in the middle of the two divided piles you are holding. Continue back and forth until you reach the end of the hair.

Step 3: Tie off hair with a clear band. To cover the band take a small piece of hair and wrap around the band and tuck under to make the braid appear more natural.

Tip: Try small pieces which will lead to more intricate details. Keep the braid pretty loose which will make it appear thicker and allow you to skip teasing the hair at the end!

Step 4: Because of the details of the braid you don’t want to grab large bloom heads that will end up covering your hard work. Instead near the top of the braid where there is exposed hair is where you should start with a large focal bloom – in this case, a white Poppy. From there work your way across the top of the braid adding in texture with white Wax Flower, soft lines from white Sweet Peas and layer as you go. Voila!
