Dreamy Texas Desert Wedding: Valerie + Taylor

Texas Wedding

We’ve definitely seen our fair share of Texas ranch weddings (one of our faves is this one!), but when Nichols Photographers sent over this stunner, held amid the dreamy west Texas desert landscape, we were pretty intrigued to say the least! Friends and family all pitched in to help those cuties above, Valerie + Taylor, bring their vision for an intimate celebration in the arid desert to life. And since Val is a florist, and has designed many-a-wedding, she knows all too well how fast the day can speed right by. With that in mind, she tell us, For us it was important to not only gather our closest family and friends long enough to get some quality face to time with each one of our guests but to do it in a place where everyone could unplug for a bit in a beautiful setting. From there we decided on Terlingua Ranch Lodge, the tiny ghost town north of Big Bend National Park – a place Taylor and I fell in love with on one of our first road trips together nearly five years ago.

We love that mindset! Let’s see how their beautiful day unfolded…

Of course, being a floral designer (for her company Davy Gray), Valerie knew exactly what she wanted floral-wise for the day, and beautifully created all of the bouquets and centerpieces!

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Our first look was really special for us. We both had such a heavy hand in all the preparation and set up in the days and hours leading up to the wedding that we really hadn't spent much alone time together. This allowed us a few precious, intimate moments before the ceremony to pause and just be together, do a little twirl and check each other out, kiss and say okay, let's do this!

On the location + design, Valerie tell us, The area’s eclectic past and stunning landscape became our inspiration. Taylor developed a menu influenced by Mexican and Native American cuisine, the flower palette was meant to resemble the out-of-this-world sunsets over the Christmas Mountains and we kept our guests warm with a huge Texas bonfire and colorful serapes. To add an extra personal touch we also incorporated many of our own household plants, rugs and furniture into the mix creating a backyard party vibe like we never left our little Austin bungalow.

The catering was provided by Taylor – yes, the groom! – who is a sous chef at one of Austin’s most-loved restaurants, Justine’s Brasserie. (Weren’t Val + Taylor hands-on in the coolest ways?!)

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

If you plan on doing much of the planning yourself, start early. It feels like the day is so far in the future but before you know it there are still 100 napkins to dipdye one week before the big day. Make your decisions, roll with them and try not to second guess your vision with the overwhelming amounts of inspiration out there. Do what makes you happy and all else will follow.
