Although this isn’t one of the shows I’m familiar with, the BBC television series Doctor WhoĀ is a sci-fi phenomenon. It’s the longest-running science fiction series on television, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year! The series follows the adventures of the Doctor, a time-traveling alien, and his human companions as they journey across the universe.Ā Pretty geeky stuff. But if there ever was a cool time to be a geek, itās now.
Photographer Candice BenjaminĀ and cinematographer Kiera Faye of Jakfoto Films, two self-identified geeks (their words!), wanted to take geek chic to a new level with this āWhovianā wedding. From Candice + Kiera:
We believe that your wedding should reflect your personality and your passions [just like us here at GWS!]. Being a geek is all about what you are passionate and excited about – what sets your imagination flying. It doesnāt have to be corny or too on-the-nose. We wanted to show that you can take inspiration from any source, and work it into a wedding style that can be appreciated by fans and non-fans alike.
We included a lot of touches that only the fans will get. The eleven tables are a reference to the eleven āregenerationsā of the Doctor, and the table numbers are portraits of each Doctor, as done by artist Meghan Stratman. The scarf worn as a stole by our officiant is a replica of the Fourth Doctorās signature costume piece. The keys – displayed on the brideās bouquet and with each escort card – represent the key that the Doctor presents to his most trusted companions, a key that opens his spaceship/time machine, the TARDIS (famously disguised as a blue British police box).
To us, Doctor Who is all about seeking adventure, finding friendship, and fighting for the people you love. Itās about how love can reach across time and space, how it can connect and even save us. What a beautiful sentiment for a wedding!
Love all that! Even though I’ve never seen an episode, still so much pretty to love and be inspired by!
The ceremony took place at Big Bear Observatory ā so pretty, right!?
Then the reception was at theĀ Huron SubstationĀ in Los Angeles.
And the film of the day fromĀ Jakfoto Films
Thanks so much to all these creative artists for dreaming + creating such an inspiring shoot!

This. Is. Epic.
Oh my goodness gracious I just love this so much. That was an amazing and unique wedding!
This shoot is amazing! I really think Dr. Who weddings are becoming something of a thing – I just got a request for a Dr. Who wedding inspiration board the other day so I am going to be sending this the bride’s way!
Thank you SO much for the feature!! It was a labor of love and we are so happy to share any Nerd Chic ideas!
@Sara That’s amazing! Well if a fellow Whovian needs any help I’m happy to help!
I love this shoot! It has given me so much inspiration for my own Doctor Who themed wedding I am planning. Can anyone tell me what is written at the very bottom of the invitation under the address of the venue. I can’t quite make it out.
Thank you so much for featuring our Doctor Who styled shoot! Everyone did such an amazing job and anytime I get to work with Candice and Kiera I am never disappointed <3 Lovely work ladies!
wow! lovely details!
oh my, what a uniquely beautiful wedding!
I’m really not seeing how this is Doctor Who inspired. There is some blue and a guy with a bow tie. That seems to be where the similarity ends.
Our goal wasn’t to hit people over the head with Doctor Who. :) We have seen that done before and wanted to class it up. What we wanted in the styling was to hide little references for the fans. :)
If you haven’t seen a lot of the show, you might miss some of the references, but it’s really packed with subtle details. The cake, the pattern on the invitations, the chair signs… and especially the vows in the video!
There are a ton of subtle Doctor Who references here… the Gallifreyan on the invites, the Van Gogh cake, the glasses, the portraits, the TARDIS windows, and especially the vows. Beautifully done.
Bowties are cool.
Love love love everything!
So cool! Love this!
Awesome! What fun colors!
Thank you so much for the feature! We had so much fun putting it together, but it’s even more fun to get responses from other fans!
They could not have said it better themselves, “We believe that your wedding should reflect your personality and your passions”. Perfect incorporation of that and the T.V. show’s aspects. Well done everyone!
I’m in love with the dress, capelet and veil especially (everything else is lovely too!). I was trying to track down the dress and looked for Hope Stanley (she is listed under bridal dress) and she seems to be a bridal stylist. Who made the dress??
The dress is an Enzoani, Modeca 2013 Collection (sold at Mary Me Bridal http://marymebridal.com) the fantastic headpiece designed by Tessa Kim can be found on tessakim.com and the BHLDN capelet on bhldn.com – the brides look came together so beautifully thanks to the creative vision of Candice Benjamin and Hope Stanley. I was in awe!!!
Brilliant inspiration. Great work team!
Absolutely beautiful!! Love everything about this!
I know very little about Dr. Who, but I am most definitely inspired by this beautiful and unique shoot! Congratulations (and kudos!) to everyone involved in bringing it to life!!
Whoops! The composer of the song is Chris Bartels of Anthem Falls Music (not Bartella) – and if you want to listen to this song “The Doctor” by itself, it’s here: http://anthemfallsmusic.bandcamp.com/track/doctor
I LOVE this. It’s just subtle enough not to be too wacky. Lovely and nerdy together. I especially love the Van Gogh cake and Gallifrey language on the invitations!
I was particularly proud of a line I said during my wedding vows. I told my husband, “You showed me that the heart is bigger on the insider”.
Ariana, that is a GREAT line! So sweet!
Fantastic!
I am absolutely in LOVE with this! You guys did an amazing job. Were the stationary and invites done just for this shoot or how could I go about getting some similar? They’re fantastic.
Again, great job on all the details!
Thank you, Hilary!
The stationery was custom designed for this shoot, but I’m sure that Mintwich Design would be thrilled to recreate it for you! Their social and contact info is on their website: http://www.mintwichdesign.com/
I’m not familiar with Dr. Who, but despite of my absence of knowledge, I can tell that this shooting is absolutely fabulous. So many great details to look at – and swoon over. The ceremony backdrop, the bridal bouquet, the wedding cake…I could continue!
Simply epic.
That dress is too splendid for words!
Lol, I was looking for DW crafts and I found this amazing wedding! I love it!
I hope you dont mind if I share my shoes with you!

Do you have any tips or instructions on how to build your backdrop? I’d love to put one together for my Doctor Who wedding!
Is it horrible that I want to steal like 75% of their ideas for my wedding right now?
