For those of who were at The Cream event the other week, you probably saw our cute neon toe shoes we made for the event. Well, today I’m going to share how you can make them yourselves! Perfect for your wedding, party or everyday wear! I love the bright pop of color on these, but you could use any color you’d like.
Materials:
• Nude Patent Pumps – I bought these from my local DSW for $40, but here is a great pair for $34 from Steve Madden that would also work great
• Pink Fluorescent Neon Spray Paint or even better Floral Spray (color even less likely to chip!)
• Packing Tape
• Old Towels (to protect your shoes when you spray)
Tape Shoes. First you’ll want to tape your shoes. The area you don’t tape is where the color will be. I taped the rubber sole also because I wanted to get a nice, clean finish. You don’t have to tape the inside of your shoes, since we will cover them with an old towel.
Next cover the shoes. Take them outside and spray 2-3 coats on the shoes (don’t use more than 3 coats as the layers of paint are too much and will most likely start to chip). Then spray the color with a sealer to protect and so it won’t chip. This one works well.
And that’s it! You are done. :) The hardest part is making sure you do a good job taping, but otherwise, so easy. Take off the tape and enjoy your fun new shoes!
We tried a pair in pink and pair in yellow – I prefer the pink, but yellow is fun too!
So incredibly cute. I love these! Already have a pair of shoes, just need the paint!
SO adorable!!!!! I currently don’t own a pair of nude shoes, but this makes me want to get a pair just to do this DIY. Haha.
what a great idea… too bad i don’t have an outdoor area to spray paint the shoes. i may have to go the the park haha…
So cute!
ooo… And if you have a heart shaped sticker you have stencil out a cute heart too… oh the possibilities!
So excited for this tutorial, Jen! I fell in love with yours a few weeks ago and now will definitely create a pair of my own. :)
this is seriously AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! want to try this so bad!
Okay, what a seriously FABULOUS IDEA! I’m digging out my watermelon pink and metallic gold spraypaints right now. Such a cool look!
So cute!!! I really want to try this!
These are absolutely amazing, have to try this!
Brilliant idea! I want to try this but with glitter. Ooh, maybe neon glitter!
BRILLANT :))
From bland shoes to funky cool shoes!
Any idea if the paint cracks or separates with movement? I have a pair of flats I want to try this on but the tips of the shoes bend with movement and I don’t want them to ruin after a few wears.
Kathleen – I’m not sure if it would work on flats that bend – it might crack. The shoes I used don’t bend at all. If you do try, I’d love to know your results! :)
Just wanted to let you know that regular spray-paint really isn’t the best solution for this. It might last you through your wedding day, but eventually you will have chipped up toes, whether the shoes are flexible or not.
What you really want to use is “Floral Spray”- it comes in a variety of colors, costs the same or less than your average can of spray paint, and is much more durable when it comes to shoes.
Brittany – Thanks for the tip! I’ve worn my twice and they still look great, but sounds like a great product I wasn’t aware of! I added that to the post. :)
I LOVE these and kept wanting to make some, so today I finally did it! It worked well only – The yellow isn’t nearly as bright as pictured. I used the same brand of rustoleum flourescent paint, but it’s more of an orangey yellow… not neon :/ It looked great on the white paper towel I set my shoes on however! How did you get it so bright?? Should I have sprayed them white first?
what an awesome idea!!! thanks for sharing :)
I have red patent leather pumps that I would love to try this with, but I’m not sure which color to paint on. Any ideas?
Hi Elizabeth, I actually first tested this on an old red patent leather shoe – the trick with that is that red is dark color, so the hot pink didn’t work well. I would pick a dark blue or gray or black maybe? Something fairly dark would be best. Good luck!
what a great idea!
sunny greetings from germany, geisslein
It would be fun to do this with neon duct tape for a night on the town.
Great tutorial!!!!!!!! checkout my tutorial for neon shoes on my blog and leave your comment!!!!.
Your even just colour the heel of the shoes.

I´ll try it soon.
I wonder if the spray paint works with leather shoes too? :)
Love it!!!!

Do you think this would work with either a turquoise or navy toe?
waahh very nice in neon. I did something like that for my shoes… http://pimprelys.over-blog.com/article-mon-cote-patriote-107591665.html
SO CUTE! VERY FASHIONABLE
What type of paint did you use? I want to spray paint my daughter’s patent leather shoes, but didn’t think regular spray paint would stick?
i want to know after wedding, if i can move the color to nude again! very important! thanks.
Hi Sancho,
Once you paint the shoes, you can’t remove the color – they are permanent. :)
My brother suggested I might like this blog.
He was totally right. This post truly made my day.
You can not imagine just how much time I had spent for this info!
Thanks!
Lovely article.
And I was just trying to figure out something interesting to do to some boring white shoes that I have. Brilliant.
Keep going i follow you
