Bridesmaids + Floppy Hats?

Reader Christina wrote me with this question: My best friend is getting married in Florida and we were thinking about bridesmaids wearing floppy hats (maybe in butter yellow) but we aren’t sure if this would look ok. We’ve both seen tons of stuff on wedding blogs about using umbrellas as a cute accessory for bridesmaids but what about hats?

From Jen: I totally love this idea! But you are right, I’ve been searching for awhile and can’t seem to find anything with bridesmaids and hats, but I wouldn’t let that stop me. The floppy hat is making a big comeback right now (I even just read an article about them in the LA Times this past weekend!). I think they would be perfect for a casual beach wedding. I’ve seen great hats at j crew, urban outfitters, anthropologie, and even target. I’ve gathered some images for inspiration. Hope this helps a bit, but I am a strong believer in doing what you want – if your friend (the bride) wants you all to wear floppy yellow hats, then i say go for it! What do the rest of you think – is it a do or will it be too much? Has anyone been to wedding where the bridesmaids wore floppy hats?

In this classic Jennifer photo, she totally pulls off the hippie boho look with her hat. Rodarte featured lots of fun floppy hats in his spring 2008 line. Love this bottom photo of Coco Rocha for the Spring 2009 H&M; line. A beautiful bride in a large hat via Martha Stewart Weddings.

Left hat by target pairs great with a simple dress. Middle photo from here – really love the chunky necklace and straw hat combo. Right from Emanuel Ungaro Spring Campaign. He used fedoras with all his pretty dresses.
