An Art Museum Wedding: Veronica + Jessie

I love that Veronica + Jessie were able to combine all their loves into their wedding day and create their perfect day. Their wedding took place at the Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, CA and all their DIY touches they incorporated really made their wedding one-of-a-kind. Thanks to Heidi Ryder Photography for the gorgeous photos.

From Veronica, If we had sum up our wedding day style into one word it would be “Us”. We originally had a vision of a mid-century modern event with elements inspired by Todd Oldom and Jonathan Adler designs but as our wedding design began taking shape we began to incorporate my love of all things sewing + craft and Jessie’s love of photography along with our shared love of music + concerts into the design. With the help of our wonderful coordinator Amanda with In The Now Weddings & Events we were able to keep our wedding from looking like it was having an identify crises and create a cohesive look that truly represented us as a couple.

Since we were working with a fairly modest budget for our area we decided from the start to put the majority of our budget towards hiring the best possible vendors we could afford and DIY’ing the majority of our décor to help keep cost down. I’m not sure either of use realized how much we were actually taking on by DIY’ing the majority of our day but at the end we all agree it was more than worth it. Every detail from the chair pillows, Yay! flags, table runners, giant pom pom wreath and even my hair comb was lovingly crafted by us with the help of our family and friends. The week leading up to the wedding was a whirlwind of wedding crafts! Fueled by late night slurpee runs and with the help of my poor brother we must have wound and fluffed over 200 yarn poms to complete our pom wreath. I don’t know who was more proud of that wreath on our wedding day us or him!

What song did you walk down the aisle to? Our bridal party walked down to Arcade Fire’s “Tunnels” and I walked out to the intro to Airborne Toxic Event’s “Innocence.” The intro is a little over a minute thirty seconds long and was just enough time for me and my Dad to make it from our hiding place to the front of the aisle! We exited to Weezer’s “My Best Friend.”

Most memorable moment of your wedding day? After we were done taking pictures, our photographer Heidi Ryder took off back to the museum leaving Jess and me to walk the ½ block back to the museum on our own. It was so nice to have that alone time to just be together in the warm post ceremony glow. I remember talking about how surreal it was to finally be married after almost 2 year of being engaged, how amazing our guest were and how we couldn’t believe this amazing day was our wedding day. It’s a great memory that only the two of us share.

The one DIY element we did outsource was all of the graphic design + printing. We contracted Kristen Pon with In the Now Weddings to design all of our graphics and paper products, with the exception of our save the dates, and she knocked it out of the park. She took the bits of pieces of inspiration we sent her and created a design scheme that fit our style to a T. She was even able to rework her design late in our planning to incorporate a hummingbird in honor of Jessie’s mom who passed away a month prior to our wedding. We had so much faith that Kristen would create something amazing for us that we choose to not see any of the finished designs until our wedding day, It was such a treat to go around our reception and cocktail hour looking at all the little elements the In the Now team created for us.

Walking into our reception on our wedding day I was blown away with how perfect of the handmade elements melded together. Throughout the night we received so many compliments from our guest about the décor but by far the best one was how very “us” our wedding was and that alone made all of our hard work worth it.

Any advice for those planning now? Take all the inspiration you can from wedding blogs and magazines but don’t lose yourself in all the pretty details! With all the beautiful weddings online and in print right now it can get really easy to lose your own personal style and end up with a wedding that while pretty says nothing about you and your partner as a couple. Take all the inspiration you can from real weddings and put your own personal spin to it. Oh and don’t forget to look to your own taste in clothing and home decor for inspiration. When we first started planning our wedding I was a mess trying to decide on a color pallet I loved that is until I found a Charlie Harper illustration in a copy of Todd Oldham’s Handmade Modern and  knew instantly I wanted a chartreuse, aqua, and orange color scheme.

Also, trust your vendors. Your wedding day goes by so quickly it’s really important to have trust in your vendors and let them execute all the details for your day while you sit back and soak up every love filled moment!
