My Favorite Wedding DIY Details of 2011

This week we are looking back at some of my favorites from the past year – love this time of year! So fun to remember all the amazing weddings + stories we’ve share this year, so we are going to look back at a bunch of them once more this week. :) Today it’s all about the amazing DIY details all you lovely couples created for your weddings! So here are my favorite wedding DIY details of 2011, I hope you enjoy…

favorite DIY wedding details

One of my most favorite weddings where the couple and their family + friends really went all out, was this Old World Carnival Wedding photographed by Gabriel Ryan Photographers. With the festivities taking place on the bride’s family property, it was a true labor of love with all the unique details and the amazing ceremony + reception space.

Who could forget this Big Sur Whimsical Wedding in the Woods! Photographed by EP Love, it was a magical woodland wedding with so many adorable details created by the couple including their ceremony backdrop, the wooden creatures and the owl tree with all the owl place cards!

One of the most popular weddings this year was full of amazing rainbow details (including a real rainbow!) photographed by Three Nails Photography.

Another handmade wedding in the woods, this beauty was photographed by Stone Crandall Photography. The wedding took place in the bride’s parents backyard and the couple designed the beautiful invite, lots of reception details and the family built the ceremony space + benches! Amazing…

Jose Villa + Joel Serrato: Their Intimate Rustic Wedding

jose villa joel serrato wedding

If you are in the wedding industry or have been reading wedding blogs for more than a month, I’m sure you know Jose Villa and Joel Serrato. Not only are they both amazing story tellers with their photos + films, they are two of the sweetest and most passionate people I’ve met. They were married this past spring and their GORGEOUS wedding is featured in the latest Martha Stewart Weddings (Winter 2012). And who do two of the most talented in our industry ask to capture their day? The amazing + sweet Elizabeth Messina of course!

It’s so obvious from the photos that she was the perfect choice to capture their love and the beautiful venue, The Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse (which is actually right down the street from their home in Los Olivos, CA). A gorgeous outdoor ceremony with the most scenic backdrop – I’ve been to the venue and it really is just stunning! Joel told me there were crazy winds the day of their wedding, so they had to go with their plan B and move the reception indoors, but you can see that made for the most intimate dinner. I’m super excited to share a small peek into their intimate and rustic affair today. Be sure to pick up the latest copy of Martha Stewart Weddings next week to see the entire spread!

Leather details and succulent accents added a soft yet masculine touch for their day. Above right is a lamp made from antique camera parts that Joel gave Jose. I love that their design scheme was based off their Polaroid collection, which is presented so well on their ceremony programs.

Congrats to Jose + Joel! We wish you both a lifetime of happiness and lots of laughs :) Be sure to check out both their blogs (Jose’s blog + Joel’s blog) to read more about their wedding and Elizabeth’s blog where she is sharing a few more photos. All of us in the wedding industry are so happy for Jose + Joel, so check out Style Me Pretty and 100 Layer Cake later this afternoon as they share a few additional photos from their special day.

A Mountaintop Christmas Elopement

winter elopement inspiration

When most people think of elopements they think of Vegas, the courthouse, or the Caribbean. The talented vendors today came up with a different type of elopement to share — an elopement at a mountain getaway during the holiday season with all the trimmings! Now doesn’t that sound romantic? A lot of brides elope these days and we say elope-away! Celebrate your love. Elope in style and add a few details to personalize your celebration. Wear the dress you’ve always wanted, get your hair and makeup done, add some flowers, decorate the venue, maybe even order a cake or two and hire a photographer to document the day. Do it all without regrets. Just because you choose to elope, doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style. :) And since it’s just the two of you, there’s no added pressure to make the day perfect for anyone but you and your fiancé! Merry Christmas all my lovelies!
